ABS Receives ISO 14001 Certification

ABS has attained ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification from SGS International Certification Services. "We believe we are the first international classification society to implement an approved ISO 14000 environmental system," said Robert D. Somerville, ABS President in accepting the certificate.

ABS was also the first classification society to gain ISO 9000 Quality Management System certification. "The Mission of ABS is to promote the security of life, property and the natural environment," Somerville pointed out. "By meeting the rigorous, internationally recognized ISO quality and environmental standards, we are able to clearly demonstrate our commitment to these principles."

The new Environmental Management System standards apply to the entire, worldwide operations of ABS, conducted through more than 150 offices in 60 countries.

ABS also offers Safety, Quality and Environmental classification notations for vessels within its fleet. These standards are based on the relevant ISM, ISO 9000 and ISO 14000 standards, supplemented by specific requirements applicable to marine operations.
