Advanced Voyage Data Recorder

      8/29/2000

AVECS Bergen, a subsidiary of Germany's AVECS Corporation, has developed a VDR under the name of MER, Marine Event Recorder. The company claims that it meets and exceeds present and future standards. The MER may be adjusted to the needs of any type of vessel during installation. In the future, MER's replay System will enable a shipping company's internal analysis of all functions of the Systems integrated in the vessel's operation.

Over a longer period of time, they will form the foundation for realistic and unbiased assessments, statistics and forecasts for the vessel's maintenance and security. Avecs reports a total of 10 installations of the MER so far. A MER was installed on board the Aida Cruises - owned 38,506 gt vessel Aida in May and a number of requests for both retrofitting and installing new units have recently been received.
