The IMO has convened a Global Task Force together with the United Nations Development Programme and Global Environment Facility to tackle the problem of the transportation of marine species in marine ballast water. The Task Force has established a new initiative, the Global Ballast Water Management Programme (GloBallast).
Some $7.6m is being allocated through the programme. Six demonstration sites are being set up in Brazil, China, India, Iran, South Africa and Ukraine where a number of activities including risk assessment, biological surveys, training and development and implementation of regulations will take place.
