Bridge Resource Management

      9/27/1999

"Each candidate for an STCW certificate or endorsement as master or mate, to be valid on or after February 1, 2002, for service on vessels in ocean or near-coastal service, shall present sufficient documentary proof that he or she understands and can effectively apply procedures for bridge team work as an essential aspect of maintaining a safe navigational watch, taking into account the principles of bridge-resource management enumerated in Section B-VIII/2 of the STCW Code." CFR 10.205 Bridge Resource Management is the newest addition to the Pacific Northwest Maritime Institute Curriculum. Time and cost are important factors to the average Mariner, therefore a Five - Day (Simulator Based) BRM Course is compressed to a three day comprehensive course. This STCW required course teaches effective use of all available resources (including human) to enhance navigation safety. Emphasis is placed on the role 'situation awareness' plays in preventing accidents caused by error chains. More information: Pacific Northwest Maritime Institute, Gregg Trunnell
