All 20 crew of the Cyprus-registered bulk carrier Henry Navigator, en route to Cape Town, were airlifted to safety as the vessel capsized and sank in heavy seas (Reuters - Cape Town, 22 October 1999).
Cape Town Port Captain John Woodend told Reuters the 13,000 deadweight tonne carrier had sunk about 35 kilometres (22 miles) off Bok Point around midnight (2200 GMT) on Wednesday. "The ship took on water before sinking...she never made it to the port,'' Woodend said, adding there were no casualties.
Officials could not give details of where the carrier was registered or where it had sailed from. It was carrying a cargo of lime and copper concentrate. The South African Maritime Safety Authority said it was monitoring the carrier's sinking to stave off any environmental hazard its fuel could pose to the coastline.
