Chinese Ferry Capsizes

The Dashun, carrying 312 passengers and crew, caught fire in heavy seas and gale force winds as the ship headed for the northeastern port of Dalian.

The Dalian Evening News said more than 140 people had been found dead, and around 20 had been rescued. The remainder of the passengers are missing. The ferry was about 10 nautical miles from Yantai when the captain saw high waves and strong winds and asked permission to return to shore. Flames were discovered and the ship sent out a distress signal. The fire later spread to the third deck causing the ship to begin breaking apart and all contact was lost with the vessel.
