ClassNK has just released a new information booklet entitled “Bulk Carrier”. This publication presents a broad overview of various aspects of the Society’s involvement with this dynamic and vital part of the marine industry. In addition to introducing the role of the surveyor in building better ships and some key activities of the Society, the booklet also outlines the history of the development of bulk carriers and explains about the various types of bulk carriers in use today.
A major focus of the publication is how regulatory requirements pertaining to bulk carriers have tightened over the years leading to the introduction of the Common Structural Rules (CSR) by IACS, the International Association of Classification Societies. Articles also describe the key contributions of the Society to this process, starting with the extensive research efforts and innovations undertaken by ClassNK to rationalize its rule requirements for bulk carriers as well as tankers and container carriers known as the Rule C100 Project.
The booklet also describes how the results of this project played an essential role in the development of the Common Structural Rules. Separate articles also explain about ClassNK’s cutting edge PrimeShip-HULL(CSR) software and the ship Condition Assessment Program (CAP) service offered by the Society. This newly released booklet should prove of great interest to anyone keen to know more about the development of bulk carriers and the efforts made to enhance their safety.
