Concept for New-Generation Vessels

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines announced that the company has formed the concept for its next-generation environment-friendly car carrier ISHIN-I (ishin one), which stands for “Innovations in Sustainability backed by Historically proven, INtegrated technologies.” This new concept will be technically feasible in the near future, by building on and refining technologies the company has already developed and adopted.

MOL expects to achieve zero CO2 emissions, while in port and during loading and unloading, by adopting large-capacity solar-power panels and rechargeable batteries. At the same it is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by 50% while at sea through use of multiple new technologies.

Optimization of propulsion efficiency will be achieved by using contra-rotating propeller drive system. This will include a diesel-electric propulsion system and a pair of propellers facing each other at the stern. The propellers share the burden of powering the ship and spin in opposite directions, allowing the rear propeller to absorb the rotation energy of the front propeller. As a result, the system efficiency is greatly increased.

Other improvements will include:

  • Advanced Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF)
  • Advanced design reducing wind resistance
  • Reduction of friction drag
  • Optimum voyage support system
  • Optimization of engine system
  • Optimization of hull design
