Cruise Ship Sinks

More than 1,100 passengers aboard a luxury cruise liner Sun Vista, owned by Singapore-based Sun Cruises Ltd scrambled overboard as the ship caught fire and sank off the western coast of Malaysia early Friday 21st May 1999. The incident occurred in international waters.
A spokesman for the marine police in Penang said the switchboard in the liner's engine room caught fire on Thursday afternoon. Evidently there was a power failure and a fire in the engine room. An investigation is under way as to why the ship sunk.
