Cruiser Gets Technology Upgrade

      8/9/1999

The USS Ticonderoga, the US Navy's second smart ship, is getting a technological facelift. Civilian engineers and workers have been stringing miles of fiber optic cable and installing computer terminals and software to transform the Aegis cruiser. Old mechanical, analog processors are being replaced by a digital system. The fiber optic network is essential to the upgrades. It links the cruiser's departments and computer terminals through transfer stations known as ATMs located in various sections of the ship. The backbone is the ship-wide area network. Once the ship is under way, the officer on the deck can monitor engines, adjust the ship's speed and monitor surface radar from a console while standing watch. The ship's voyage management system will enable the cruiser to steer itself to station once the proper course information is programmed into the computer. During an emergency the computer can log and transmit information whereas before many people were needed to record the information. The new system will free more people to respond to emergencies.
