Two passenger ferries, each with capacity for 2,000 people, have been ordered by the Indonesian government through a low credit deal.
The destination of the order, however, has still to be decided. Industry sources believe two yards lead the race, cruise ship specialist Meyer Werft and Luerssen Werft, both of whom have been linked with Indonesian business in the past. Neither yard has reported an immediate order.
Meyer has built more than 20 passenger ships for Indonesia and has material supply agreements with the country while Luerssen has just completed construction of the Mahakam, the fourth of five fast monohull ferryships being built in co-operation with PT Pal for Indonesia's state shipping company, ASDP.
