Design and Operation for Abnormal Conditions II


There is a long maritime tradition of attributing the damage and even loss of vessels to abnormal conditions caused by “freak” or “rogue” waves. While the damage can be well documented there is usually little real information on the actual waves that caused the incident. However, recent work particularly in the offshore sector has provided useful insight into these so called “freak” waves. Present design methods do not cater for such events, nor are current safety measures or weather routing necessarily protecting ships that meet these conditions. Recent studies and experiments have shown that critical survival conditions can be identified. Could or should additional design or operational requirements be introduced to provide a ship or offshore installation with some capability to survive these abnormal conditions.

The RINA invites papers on the following, topics:

  • defining abnormal waves; size, shape, frequency of occurrence, etc
  • first principles design and the identification of critical conditions
  • survival design approach for ships and marine structures
  • present status of non-linear ship motion programs
  • green water and slam wave impact design requirements
  • oceanographic aspects of survival design
  • ship operational considerations in survival seas
  • feedback of service experience in extreme storms
