Digital Shipbuilding System

      2/18/2002

Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) initiated a full-scale research to develop the digital shipbuilding system that merges current shipbuilding practices and the digital information technology. This innovative system can simulate entire shipbuilding process from the initial stage to the launch in a virtual environment. It will be able to simulate and optimize the construction process by planning manpower deployment, method of construction, logistics flow and automation for best productivity prior to actual design and construction activities. This will offer substantial help when different types of ships are constructed simultaneously or when a sharp increase of the number of contracted ships is expected.

SHI plans to allocate a total of 6 billion Won over three years until the end of 2004,and it is expected to make significant contribution to strengthening the competitiveness of the Korean shipbuilding technology. The joint research efforts will be undertaken by a consortium which is lead by Seoul National University and includes 8 universities, Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO) as well as professional companies in information technology fields. The goal of the project is to make significant improvements in shipbuilding process by combining innovative production information and digital manufacturing technologies.Dr.Seong-Yong Han, Vice President and Head of R&D Center at SHI, said that Korea must integrate IT technology with its shipbuilding technology to solidify its dominant position in the global market. He added that SHI's goal is to develop an integrated shipbuilding management system with digital simulation which can improve productivity of the shipyard, optimize production line layout, and evaluate production efficiency.
