Early Warning System for Spill Detection
7/8/2002
Applied Microsystems (Canada) announced that the Esquimalt Graving Dock (EGD) in Victoria (Canada) decided to install Spill SentryTM - an early warning system that detects water-borne spills of oil and other hydrocarbons. EGD realized it needed a technology alternative to visual inspection capable of detecting spills earlier and more reliably. The system offers 24-hour real-time monitoring, reliability in rough weather conditions, and automated notification capabilities.
The system automatically places telephone calls to key decision-makers when spills, slicks or sheens are detected. An early warning means better environmental stewardship as well as a reduction in clean-up costs. The spill can be cleaned-up before it leaves the dry-dock’s contained environment thus preventing a potential pollution of open-water.The Esquimalt Graving Dock is the largest non-military graving dock on the West Coast of the Americas. The operators claim that this facility is one of only three throughout the world to have gained ISO’s 14001 certification for environmental management.
