Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering intends to establish about five overseas shipyards in East Asia beginning in five years, according to the company. The plans are to strengthen the current infrastructure over the coming five years and then to set up five to six shipbuilding plants in East Asian nations such as Japan, China and Vietnam. The company wants to maintain its hub of technology development and management in Korea, while boosting output in other Asian regions where labor costs might be lower.

This follows trends successfully tested by the Aker Kvaener group - one of the world's leading builders of cruise ships, LNG carriers and container ships, which has 16 shipbuilding facilities around the globe. Daewoo also intends to revise its human resources management system, introduce a salary peak system, adopt an employee stock-ownership plan, and issue global depository receipts in order to encourage employee loyalty.
