DC Maritime Technologies Inc prepared the initial electrical and machinery control systems for BC Ferries first fast catamaran the Pacificat #1.

The system was designed in accordance with the IMO High Speed Code and DnV classification requirements. Electrical system design for high speed craft differs significantly from that of conventional marine vessels. One significant item for a catamaran is the ability to take advantage of the two independent hulls. This enables the use of one of the craft's main generators for the emergency source of power.

A constraint in high speed craft design is to minimize weight. The major electrical items affecting weight are the generators and cables. DCMT developed strategies aimed at minimizing generator size and hence weight in addition to maximizing cable loading and minimizing length to minimize cable weight. David Clark P.Eng
