Gas-Leak Dispersal

      11/15/1999

Danish Maritime Institute has recently become involved in investigations of gas leak and fire outbreak scenarios on FPSO’s. These pose serious safety problems on an offshore vessel both in terms of asphyxiation of personnel and ignition of the gas itself. Safety requirements for these vessels are strict, forcing FPSO operators to investigate safety issues before a vessel is in operation.

The FPSO Berge Hugin was recently tested in DMI’s Boundary - Layer Wind Tunnel for a series of potential gas-leak scenarios to determine whether or not explosive gases accumulate below the process deck. Tests were conducted by two means: smoke flow visualization and tracer-gas concentration measurements. Smoke visualization of the flow from gas leaks shows immediately whether or not problems are likely to occur. Such qualitative tests are then followed up by quantitative tracer-gas concentration tests to compare the test conditions with industry standards. More information: DMI
