Three European ship-owners could be set to order up to a dozen handysize product tankers at South Korea's Hyundai Mipo Dockyard as tanker operators focus their attention on replacing older tonnage after the Erika incident.
Arminiter of Monaco, D'Alesio Gaetano and a third undisclosed Mediterranean owner have each placed letters of intent with Hyundai Mipo for two 35,000 dwt product tankers plus options. The price being discussed is thought to be around $24m for each vessel, creating a potential order windfall for the South Korean shipbuilder worth $300m. Delivery dates for the first six ships have been earmarked to begin some time in 2002.
