This unique fouling control system for subsea areas has a low surface energy to prevent fouling organisms gaining a firm hold. Light fouling is removed by natural wave motion or with minimal effort by a diver. Silicone based coatings give the best degree of "easy clean" behaviour and are effective in reducing macrofouling. Silicone elastomers show poor substrate adhesion to materials other than themselves. To overcome this a high technology coating system was designed to coat a variety of substrates, including steel. Initially one or two coats of an anti-corrosive paint is applied. This is necessary because, although silicone elastomers are hydrophobic, they are permeable and without the anti-corrosive scheme damage to the substrate by corrosion could occur. The first coat of the silicone elastomer scheme is then applied, which is a modified epoxy (adhesion modifier) engineered to attach the silicone elastomer coats to the anti-corrosive scheme. A silicone polymer based tie coat is then applied which is designed to aid adhesion of the low surface energy finish coat to the system. Finally, the pigmented silicone elastomer finish is applied to complete the scheme . The fouling control performance of the system is optimised if a smooth surface finish is obtained and 72 hours is allowed before immersion for the coating to cure. Application is typically performed using airless spray. However, the system can be applied by brush or roller, and readily lends itself to application by a spinning head unit for the internals of pipes. The properties of silicones which give rise to low surface energies also result in low solubility parameters and, hence, incompatibility with other polymers. Therefore, great care is taken to reduce the possibility of silicone cross contamination with other surface coatings, both in manufacture and application. Dedicated equipment or thorough cleaning is required after application to limit contamination. Silicone elastomer coating schemes have proved to be effective fouling control alternatives for sea water inlets and offshore structures. They are environmentally friendly, releasing no biocides and provided the surface is not mechanically damaged, the silicone elastomer system provides a long life system.
