Korea Outpaced Japan in Shipbuilding

      3/29/2001

Korean shipbuilders nabbed a 41% share of the global market last year making the country the world's largest commercial shipbuilding nation. The year 2000 was also a first for Korea to outpace rival Japan in tonnage of ships-built coupled with the number of orders.

The latest survey by Lloyd's Register puts Japan second to Korea in the global tally at 38% of world market share and China in a distant third with nearly 6%. But, with China's emergence in the shipbuilding industry, market watchers say Korea needs to shift its focus to higher value-added models to hold onto its lead.
