Marine Gas Turbine Update

Engineers responsible or likely to assume responsibility for the gas turbine as a prime mover, as an alternative to the diesel engine, would derive great benefit from this event held on 4th October in the City Conference Centre in London. The marine engineer today sees the Royal Navy ’s extensive experience of the application of aero-derivative gas turbines as propulsion engines in a range of naval vessels. This has lead to the adoption of gas turbines for merchant vessels such as fast ferries, container ships and cruise vessels, again in place of the previously ubiquitous diesel engine.

The Institute of Marine Engineers and Cranfield University have co-operated to provide a one-day update on the current status, applications and expectations of the modern gas turbine for marine propulsion duties. The presentations will be by senior members of the staff of the Department of Power Engineering and Propulsion at Cranfield University, which has an international reputation as a centre of excellence for gas turbine training and research. The programme also includes an overview by senior engineers from a major gas turbine manufacturer.
