Marine Institute gains world recognition

      5/17/1999

The Marine Institute is the first Canadian institution to be recognized as meeting the new standards, which were approved by a convention of the International Maritime Organization, the international body governing the marine transportation industry. International recognition for meeting new standards for training and certification of watchkeepers gives the Marine Institute a distinct edge on training mariners worldwide.
The convention, known as STCW ’95, imposes rigorous standards on all national marine administrations and their associated training institutions. The Marine Institute is already working with maritime colleges in the Philippines. In late February, a partnership led by the institute won a contract worth $0.5 million (CAD) to help maritime colleges in the Philippines meet the new international standards. The four-year contract will concentrate on upgrading staff, facilities and curriculum.
