Maritime Boundaries Software

      10/18/1999

CARIS-Universal Systems Ltd., New Brunswick, Canada announces the release of CARIS LOTS (Law Of The Sea), the first off-the-shelf software package specifically designed for aiding organizations to submit a legal territorial claim under the United Nation’s Convention on the Law of the Sea. CARIS LOTS uses the worldwide proven technology of DELMAR 2 for boundary calculations while offering seamless integration of disparate data sources and formats in a user-friendly environment.

The ability of a State to lay claim to a wide variety of maritime boundaries is fundamental to the sovereignty over ocean activities and its ocean and seabed resources. These legal parameters are essential to control a host of ocean activities. User flexibility and interactivity are underlying themes in CARIS LOTS. Planing can begin immediately, data can be input from several from various GIS systems and public sources including IHO’s world bathymetry charts and World Data Center’s charts. Since its release CARIS LOTS has gained the attention of not only coastal nations and their respective governments but also resource exploration companies, legal service providers dealing in international boundary and juridical matters, academic institutions and private organizations working in environmental and resource management.
