Mega-Float Structures
4/12/1999
Japan is looking into development of floating marine structures as an alternative method for utilizing the ocean space. The Mega-Float Technological Research Association comprising of shipbuilders and steelmakers implements research and development project of Very Large Floating Structures. The typical structure has a span of several kilometers and a lifetime of over 100 years. Floating structures have a wide variety of applications, including airports, harbor terminals, energy-related facilities, and leisure facilities. The projects first phase, which is now completed, resulted in establishing on-sea joining technology, proven design methods, long term (100 years) anti-corrosion protection methods, motion evaluation methods, evaluation of temperature, noise and vibration impact on the structure. It has also been confirmed that the floating structure has negligible environmental impact.
Advantages of the Mega-Float structure: (1) Sea areas can be utilized regardless of their depth or subsoil condition etc., (2) Earthquakes have virtually no impact on floating structures. (3) Floating structures have negligible impact on natural environment. (4) Construction cost and time are not affected by the sea depth. (5) Existing facilities can be easily extended and it is feasible to move a floating structure to another site. More information: Technological Research Association of Mega-Float
