Moisture Cure Urethane Technology

MCU-Coatings (Belgium) manufactures single component moisture cured urethane (polyurea) anti-corrosion coatings and paints. Based on a new coating technology these products have proven to outperform the well known traditional two-component epoxy and polyurethane coating and paint systems. MCU uses only 4 to maximum 5 different products to protect the whole vessel or offshore structure steel from corrosion.

MCU coatings are single component coatings with thin film technology, which allows for easy application. These coatings cure quickly even in low temperatures, but with the addition of a QuikCure accelerator, recoat windows can be reduced by as much as 80%. According to the company, the main advantages of this technology are:
  • can be applied in high humidity 99%
  • cures fast at low temperature -12°C and
  • tolerates damp substrates
  • is resistant to moisture, rain, or can be immersed within 30 minutes after application
  • tolerates minimal surface preparation and flash rusting
  • is compatible with most old coatings

Most recently, BW Offshore awarded a third major contract to MCU-Coatings to protect all tanks, including ballast, grey water, black water and potable water tanks from corrosion on the BW Pioneer, Cascade & Chinook project. To avoid grit contaminating the modules, UHP or Wet abrasive blasting methods will be used to do the surface preparation. The high tolerance to moisture, damp substrates and flash rusting makes MCU-Coatings advantageous for this type of projects.
