New Safety Administrations in China

Xinhua News Agency reported on 28th December 1999 that twelve new maritime safety administrations were formally established under the Ministry of Communications (China). Administrations are located in 11 coastal provinces and ports, including Liaoning, Hebei, Yantai, Fujian, Xiamen and Hainan.

This is another vital step in China's reform of its aquatic safety system, a move promoted by the State Council last year. So far, 14 of the 20 administrations have been set up. The current serious maritime safety problems have made quick reforms imperative.

A vessel sank last November in north China's Bohai Sea with a death toll of 280 passengers. It is one of the most tragic sea accidents in the history of New China.
