New Ultra Deepwater Vessel

Coflexip Stena Offshore announced today that it has signed a letter of award with Hyundai Mipo Dockyard for the construction of its new-build ultra deepwater pipelay and construction vessel. The award targets delivery of the vessel for January 2001. Beginning of operations is scheduled for the second quarter 2001. The decision was made after reviewing bids received from 7 international shipyards. This multipurpose vessel (192m long, 32m wide, with a maximum displacement of 52,000 tons) has been designed to lay rigid and flexible pipes, and umbilicals down to 2,500 meters. The main features are a storage capacity of at least 8,000 tons of products, a transit speed of 13 knots, and a heavy lift capability of 400 tons. The new-build hull selected by CSO is based on the Gusto 10,000 design. This vessel will be the only one of her class to be able to lay flexible as well as rigid lines in ultra deepwaters.

The unique pipelay equipment, for which a contract will be awarded in the coming weeks, will be composed of 2 large reels for rigid pipe, 2 carousels for flexible pipes and umbilicals, and a tiltable ramp, equipped with tensioners, located over the central moonpool for the laying of both rigid and flexible lines. The vessel will also be equipped with two advanced work class ROVs. The marine equipment contracts already awarded by CSO include: azimuthal thrusters from Kamewa; engines from MAN B&W; and power and vessel management systems from Siemens PLC.
