News from South Africa

      5/10/1999

The following selection of brief news has been received from South Africa: Investigation of sinking of fishing vessel SUDUR HAVID off South Georgia last year is now before a Maritime Court of Enquiry in Cape Town. Allegations of an unseaworthy vessel and lack of command are being put to the Court.

Rumours of a possible new Diamond Mining vessel for work off Namibia are circulating in the Port of Cape Town. Recent addition to the De Beers fleet of offshore diamond mining ships, the Gariep, is reported as successfully completing trials and is now on station.

Durban Shipyard, previously building luxury yachts for Oceanco is now building Tugs for PORTNET the State harbour authorities.

South African Navy acquisition of Corvettes and Submarines is now understood to be held up by the country's second democratic election. Discussions are however continuing with the preferred shipyards Blohm+Voss and HDW.

Sale of various portions of the Safmarine Fleet is reported as being satisfactorily concluded and certain personnel and management changes are now happening.
