The development and fielding of night vision capability ahead of the technology curve is now seen as a priority for the US military in the optimization of its real-time situational awareness capabilities as it faces increasingly asymmetric threats.
While R&D and innovation in night vision technology has been brisk from the research and manufacturing sectors alike; DoD has appropriated only sporadic funding to this procurement area and has issued minimal purchase orders until recently. Clearly; however, with an unequivocal escalation in demand from the field, the Forces are suddenly keen to explore what vendors have to offer in this space.
To maximize the supply chain for the benefit of all stakeholders, communication channels between the military, prime contractors and sub contractors must be ramped up and facilitated. Furthermore, a new issue surrounding the imposition of regulatory penalties is impacting leading manufacturers and complicating the export market for US systems.
