Norwegian Authorities under Fire

The grounding of the Norwegian high-speed catamaran Baronen off Bergen has raised fresh fears about the safety of such craft. The incident follows last November's Sleipner sinking, which claimed 16 lives. Norwegian maritime authorities could now come under fire for not making night vision equipment mandatory on board high-speed light craft.

The owner of Baronen has confirmed that she did not have such equipment. In addition, safety standards at the shipowner, Hardanger Sunnhordlandske Dampskipsselskap, could face close scrutiny after it emerged that the two Kelvin Hughes radars on board the Baronen might not have been of a type approved by the International Maritime Organisation's high-speed craft code. The shipowner also owned the Sleipner.
