Lloyd's Register (LR) has become the first organisation in Europe to be appointed as a Notified Body for the new EC Pressure Equipment Directive (PED). LR can now provide compliance assessment services to companies needing to comply with the new PED.
The benefit of PED compliance is that, once a manufacturer has demonstrated that its equipment meets all the applicable safety requirements, CE marking can be affixed. This will allow products to move freely throughout the European Economic Area (EEA), helping to ensure common safety standards throughout Europe.
The Pressure Equipment Directive is due to come into force in November 1999 and will have a major impact on organisations involved in the manufacture, import, purchase or marketing of a wide range of pressure equipment - from pressure vessels, valves and transducers to fired boilers and safety accessories - throughout the EEA. The new directive will have far-reaching implications for a number of market sectors that manufacturers or uses equipment under pressure.
