Oceaneering Joins Deep Tap Team

Oceaneering International, Inc. announced it has signed an agreement with three other companies to develop cutting edge technology for performing diverless, deepwater hot taps. Hot taps perforate flowing oil or gas pipelines, while the lines remain in service, in order to connect new pipelines to existing ones. Divers are typically used to perform such operations on offshore pipelines. Deep Tap technology will employ equipment and processes which enable a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to reach beyond the current depth limitation of divers.

With Deep Tap, ROVs will be used to connect gathering pipelines to transmission lines in water depths down to 10,000 feet. Patent applications have been filed, and the first commercial demonstration of the technology is scheduled for the fall of 2000.

Dick Frisbie, Senior Vice President, stated, "Deep Tap is another example of technological advancements that will be required to support the oil and gas industry attempts to produce hydrocarbons from the deepwater frontier. Oceaneering was chosen to be a part of this progressive group because of our demonstrated leadership role in providing ROV capabilities. When fully developed, this technology will enhance the oil and gas industry's ability to produce hydrocarbons from increasingly greater water depths as it has the potential to significantly reduce the costs associated with pipeline transportation from deepwater reservoirs. "
