November 2001 offers opportunity for suppliers to the fishing industry to meet the major owners and operators of much of South East Asia's fishing industries in one place at one time. The unique circumstance that brings the South East Asian fishing industry together is the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) Millennium Fisheries Conference and Exhibition, being held in Bangkok from November 21 to 24, 2001. The Millennium Fisheries Conference will be pivotal to the future of the commercial fishing industry in the region.
Throughout the ASEAN region a vast expansion and modernisation process is currently changing the face of the fishing industry. As part of this modernisation process, over 500 steel fishing vessels of 20 to 50 metres LOA have been built in Thailand over the last 10 years. Vietnam¹s fisheries ministry has estimated that the total investment in their fisheries sector will surge to between US$2.3 billion and US$3.8 billion between now and 2010. Of this, the ministry says, about US$500 million will be needed for offshore fishing gear, US$2.3 billion for aquaculture and US$228 million for seafood processing. Unlike many regions where the fishing industry is made up of small owner/operators, many owners in the ASEAN region control extremely large fleets.
These owners tend to make their own purchasing decisions regarding their businesses which means that any potential business struck with these companies will most probably result in large orders for the supplier.
The ASEAN Millennium Fisheries Exhibition will be the region's major fishing industry event for at least a decade and will provide suppliers of goods, services and ships to the fishing and aquaculture industries with a unique opportunity to make valuable contacts and sales.
