Order for 8 Container Carriers

Hanjin Heavy Industries has won a $160 million contract to build eight container carriers for Reederei B. Rickmers GmbH & Cie. of Germany. It appears that out of the eight container ships in the class of 1,200TEU, four are on firm order with the rest on option.
Each carrier is 158.2 meters from bow to stern, 25.6 meters from starboard to port, and 13.7 meters high, and can speed up to 21.5 knots. The ordered carriers are to be equipped with top of the line satellite-based global positioning system (GPS) and will be able to cruise at the highest speed among those in the same class.
Hanjin is scheduled to deliver the first carrier in May, 2000, with the remaining to be handed until December the same year. Over 20 ships of this type have been built by Hanjin and are now in commission.
