Patent for Double-Hull Rebuilding

Maritrans Operating Partners L.P announced that it has applied for a patent on its proprietary process for rebuilding single hull tank vessels with internal double hulls.
In November of 1998, Maritrans completed the rebuilding of the 10,549 gross ton tank barge MARITRANS 192. Formerly the single-hull OCEAN 192, the MARITRANS 192 was rebuilt with an internal double hull to conform to the double hull requirements of the federal Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA'). Using modular internal hull sections fabricated with computer-assisted design in an innovative manufacturing process, Maritrans was able to completely rebuild the barge, bringing the vessel into full compliance with OPA's requirements. The MARITRANS 192 is now successfully in service transporting petroleum products in the Gulf of Mexico.
The rebuilding of the MARITRANS 192 marked the first large single hull tank vessel to be rebuilt with a double hull to meet OPA's mandate. Maritrans has now applied for patent protection on this process, and on vessels rebuilt using this process. Maritrans' patent, once awarded, will grant Maritrans the right to exclude others from practicing its patented process, and otherwise from rebuilding vessels that are covered by the patent. Maritrans will also be entitled to damages for any infringement of its patent. It is Maritrans' intent to vigorously enforce its rights once the patent has been issued.
Maritrans owns and operates one of the USA largest independent fleets of oil tankers, tugboats, and oceangoing petroleum tank barges. Headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Maritrans has additional fleet operations in Tampa, Florida.
