The ship simulation division of Kongsberg Maritime Ship Systems has recognised that the needs of mariners and ship operators are changing and require other training methods to endorse the skills of mariners in specialist areas. In answer to this need, KMSS has launched “Polaris Desk Top”. A PC based simulation system based on the same software used in its full Polaris 3.0 Simulation Systems. “Polaris Desk Top” provides Single and Limited task training modules on subjects such as ECDIS, ARPA and Instrument Navigation.

This is highly focused training using PC based simulation and saves carrying out single task training in the full simulator, thereby increasing throughput of students and increasing the efficiency of the training establishment. The flexibility of Polaris DeskTop allows the system to be also used for onboard training. This allows mariners to gain proficiency and experience in a safe, simulated environment, based on exactly the same technology as the Full Mission simulators used in the top training schools around the world. Polaris Desk Top software has been developed as a stand-alone part of KMSS e-learning Total Training programme.
