Possibilities in Data Transmission
Aberdeen-based Kongsberg Simrad Ltd has taken a quantum leap in data transmission technology with its revolutionary new product, IRIS (Integrated Remote Intelligent System). IRIS enables the transmission of multiple forms of sensor acquisition data, eg real-time video signals and sonar signals, as well as control data, via a single fibre-optic link - eradicating the need for traditional multiple cable links. Fundamental to its design is its ability to transmit high-quality digital data, particularly where the need to transmit sensor data would not otherwise be possible due to system bandwidth limitations. IRIS has numerous commercial applications including ROVs, BOP control, process control and industrial robotics, while in the military arena, typical applications include submarine data highways, command buses and secure data transmission. A prototype system, recently developed for the underwater ROV market, has demonstrated considerable cost-reduction benefits in terms of economy of space within the ROV. Traditionally, ROV video systems require a dedicated transmission and recording system for signals from each separate video camera, and are therefore bulky and expensive overheads. IRIS's single digital data stream format reduces space requirements and complexity, and offers the additional benefit of ease of use for the operator/maintainer.
