Princess Cruise Lines Orders Smoke Hoods

Vancouver, B.C. - Industry leader Princess Cruise Lines has made the decision to equip its fleet of cruise ships with EVAC-U8 Emergency Escape Smoke Hoods. These sophisticated fire-safety products, which protect against smoke inhalation, are intended for use by crew members.
According to Ernest Moniz, Vice-President of Sales and Marketing for Brookdale International Systems Inc., manufacturer of the EVAC-U8, the company has received an order for 4,000 units, with deliveries beginning in May 1999. Princess Cruise Lines currently operates nine vessels, with two more to be operational by 2002.
Brookdale has previously sold EVAC-U8's to a large number of Maritime customers - The Blue Star Line, Holland America Lines and the Canadian Coast Guard are examples - but the company considers this to be a significant order to an innovative player in a fast-growing industry. "Princess is a cruise industry pioneer" said Moniz, "and this is a demonstration of their commitment to safety aboard their vessels".
The cruise industry as a whole has an excellent safety record, but incidents can occur, as was so graphically illustrated by the fire aboard the 'Ecstacy' off the coast of Florida in July of 1998. 54 people were injured, almost all of them suffering from smoke inhalation.
Prevention and control of fire aboard ships presents a number of unique problems. Special attention must be paid to fire safety, and in particular to evacuation from enclosed areas that can fill quickly with the toxic fumes generated by fire. Smoke hoods are the solution to this problem, and the EVAC-U8 represents the state-of-the-art in smoke hood technology.
This remarkable device was developed by Captain John Swann, President and CEO of Brookdale. His 20 years experience in the British Merchant Navy, combined with a strong technical background, provided an insight into the fire safety problems faced by mariners, as well as the expertise to solve them. EVAC-U8 was the winner of the 1996 Seatrade Award for Safety at Sea.
