Propulsion System Evaluation

      3/26/1999

DC Maritime Technologies Inc. has recently released a design guideline on Propulsion System Evaluation. This guideline is directed towards electrical propulsion systems and is intended to assist the decision process when selecting a marine propulsion system.
The guideline is in 3 sections (30 pages). Section 1 describes an approach and methodology to determine suitable selection criteria for evaluation. Section 2 describes the characteristics and attributes of the components of an electrical propulsion system. Section 3 describes four of the most common systems in use today.
The guideline stresses the need to evaluate on a "global" basis rather than on one characteristic (e.g. its too expensive!)
DCMT has extensive experience with electrical propulsion systems having completed studies for ice breakers, research ships, survey vessels and ferries. DCMT's staff have supervised the design and construction of electric propulsion systems for an oceanographical research ship and semi-submersible drilling rig and have completed condition surveys on Canadian Coast Guard electrically propelled vessels.
The guideline is available free of charge.
Please contact DCMT.
