Shipbuilding in the 21st Century

      4/11/2000

The European Shipbuilding and Conversion industry faces increasing technical demands, greater international competition, a new legislative environment and changing organisation and skills needs. Information Technology (IT) has an important role to play in this changing environment. A conference scheduled for December 2000 will identify and develop strategies for improved competitiveness, by identifying where priority and effort in the research and development of IT solutions should be directed. Those wising to submit a synopsis (no more than 250 words) are requested to do so before 21st April 2000.

Ships are large, complex, short production run or "one of a kind" type products and require an effective multidisciplinary approach. Distributed engineering and production are becoming an increasingly important element in shipbuilding and conversion throughout Europe. This involves the shipyards, service and equipment suppliers, classification societies, regulatory bodies, research institutes and the ship owner. Effective information analysis and data management is essential for such co-operative design, manufacturing and operation on a global scale. In order to achieve substantial efficiency gains the industry needs to consider organisational and behavioural changes and develop the corresponding IT tools and system interconnectivity. Papers are invited on a variety of subjects.
