CHANGEABLE, volatile and capital intensive - characteristics of the shipping industry which make ship finance a perilous world. The future role of traditional methods and a look at the alternative techniques of raising ship finance is just one of the topics to be discussed at the Lloyd's Shipping Economist Shipping Finance conference. Peter Stokes, executive director of Lazard Capital Markets, will be giving an insight into the worst ship finance ideas of the last millennium with a variety of case studies illustrating what went wrong, how and why.
Setting the scene for the two-day event, to be held in London Marriott and organised by Lloyd's List Events, is Michael A J Parker, managing director of Citibank. Looking at the changing structure of shipping, Parker will be asking how far the shipping industry can consolidate and what effect this trend among owners, charterers and cargo owners is having on the market.
