Sonars for Korean Navy
3/19/2002
Simrad has won a contract to supply its advanced SP75 Omni Directional Sonars to the Korean Navy. The Sonars will be fitted on a new series of coastal patrol vessels currently under construction at the Kangnam yard in Busan. The order covers a total of 32 vessels, which will be constructed over a period of five years. The final number of vessels is subject to confirmation of government funding but the initial five Sonars are to be delivered by June 2002. The Simrad SP75 is an upgraded version of proven SP70 low frequency sonar developed for commercial fishing vessels.
Simrad SP70 Sonar has the frequency range from 20 to 30 kHz, which according to Simrad offers the longest detection range among commercial sonars. The multi-frequency feature prevents interference from other vessels, and with the full circle beam stabilization, it maintains a clear picture of the target even in rough seas. The SP75 has a full circle pitch and roll stabilisation and offers a multi-frequency operation features. This allows the user to extend the detection range and avoids interference from other sonars in the area. A modified hull unit for the sonar transducer will be provided to meet the particular specification of the Korean Navy vessels.
