Survey of Coatings Market

The Society for Protective Coatings, in collaboration with WEH Corporation, recently completed and published a US nationwide survey of coating manufacturers and end-users. The purpose of the study is to identify trends and potential growth areas within the domestic protective coatings market, according to SSPC. An initial phase of the study was done in 1999 with a survey of coating manufacturers and industrial painting contractors.

The latest work, titled “A Survey of the United States Industrial Maintenance Coatings Market: Phase Two,” includes 40 pages of the following types of information:

  • coating manufacturers’ sales by industry end-use, new construction vs. maintenance, U.S. geographic area, substrate, surface preparation method, product form, resin type, etc.;
  • manufacturers’ average sales volumes, 5-year sales growth, 3- to 5-year growth expectations, and other figures for the year 2000;
  • facility owners’ coatings consumption by new construction vs. maintenance, U.S. geographic area, substrate, and supply source; and
  • owners’ criteria for selecting and maintaining business relationships with coating suppliers and painting contractors; the use of in-house crews vs. outside painting contractors; and owners’ reliance on SSPC’s Painting Contractor Certification Program (PCCP).
