Tablet PC's for Maritime Shipping Industry

Dauphin Technology announced an agreement with Danaos Peripherals, part of Danaos' group of companies, to provide Dauphin Orasis(R) Tablet PC's to Danaos and to jointly develop wireless computer solutions for its customers in the maritime shipping industry. Applications include accounting, inventory tracking, Internet access, email, onboard and offshore communications, on board/off board remote maintenance, WAP applications and platforms, crew management and training along with wireless LAN services.

Plans for the two companies are to jointly configure wireless solutions targeted for use in the near future as well as long-term applications. Anticipated quantities for the year 2001 are expected to surpass 1,000 Orasis(R) units while ramping up larger quantities for the years thereafter. Initial shipments are estimated to start at the end of the second quarter 2001.

Advances in portable computer technology and wireless networking, along with decreases in communications costs, allow the vessel's information systems to be integrated with office and fleet management systems. This gives vessel and fleet operators better information regarding ship systems, status, maintenance, supplies, etc. Faster access to this information reduces wasted calls and delayed departures and arrivals. Use of a wireless handheld PC offers dramatic time savings and flexibility on board the vessel.
