HMI Brenton Reef is the fifth and final vessel in a series of 45,000 dwt lightship tankers built by Newport News Shipbuilding for Hvide Marine, Inc. of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
With their double-hull construction and state-of-the-art electronics and safety systems, these tankers provide an extra margin of protection against environmental damage and are the safest method available for transporting chemical and petroleum products. Work performed during the trials included testing of the ships main engine, speed, maneuverability, anchor system, fire-fighting system and cargo system. The ship is capable of carrying a wide variety of chemical products in 14 specialty-coated tanks.
