Technical Alert – Torsional Vibration

Recently issued by Lloyd’s Register of Shipping, a ‘Technical Alert’ regarding torsional vibration in main propulsion shafting systems is applicable to all ships with restricted main engine speed ranges. It is suspected that excessive torsional vibration of the shafting system has been a contributory factor in a few recent incidences of fracture or damage to intermediate shafts and bolted connections. Those ships affected have main propulsion shafting systems designed with a restricted speed range in way of the major I-node torsional vibration resonance.

Within the restricted speed range the shaft torsional stresses are acceptable for transient operation but are too large for continuous operation. In some cases a torsional vibration damper is also fitted, which reduces the magnitude of the torsional stresses around the resonant speed. It is important that the speed restrictions are adhered to and that torsional vibration dampers, if fitted, function correctly. The restricted speed range should be passed through quickly during engine manoeuvring. It is also advisable to avoid prolonged operation near the upper and lower speed limits.
