The Heyerdahl Award

A short list of candidates for the Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award has been announced. The purpose of the Award is to contribute to an improvement of the global environment, announce the environmental benefits of shipping as a mode of transport, and to serve as an inspiration for implementing new, specific environmental measures. The Award will be presented on 3 June 2003 in Oslo, Norway, at the start of Nor-Shipping week.

The following companies have been shortlisted:
  • The International Tanker Owners Pollution Federation Limited (ITOPF) - a non-profit organisation which constitutes concentration of expertise on how to deal with ship-source pollution, including effects of oil spills, cleaning techniques, response strategies, contingency planning and cost of oil spills. ITOPF is nominated for its world-leading role in maritime environmental knowledge management and knowledge sharing.
  • OptiMarin AS a company that has developed a system for on-board ballast water treatment. The system is installed in passenger and RO/RO vessels for ballast water treatment capacities up to 3000 m3/h. OptiMarin AS is nominated for their pioneering development of cost efficient ballast water treatment plants for shipboard installation.
  • Eidesvik AS a Norwegian shipowner company which has developed the first offshore supply vessel to be powered by Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) that will result in 85 percent reduction in the NOx, 20 percent CO2 and 100 percent SOx emissions. Eidesvik is nominated for establishing the necessary framework and making it commercially viable to build LNG powered ships.

Dr. Thor Heyerdahl and the Norwegian Shipowners' Association launched the Thor Heyerdahl International Maritime Environmental Award in June 1999. From January 2003 the sponsorship includes also the shipping classification society DnV as well as insurance companies Skuld and Gard Services.
