USCG certified both the Turner Designs TD-4100 and TD-4100 XD on-line oil in water monitors as Oil Content Meter – 15 ppm bilge alarms. Both oil content meters comply with the 15 ppm bilge alarm requirements stipulated by regulation 16(5) of Annex I to Marpol 73/78. This certification package comes on the heels of the Canadian Coast Guard Certification of the TD-4100 as a 5 ppm bilge alarm that was issued in January 1999. The USCG certification lead to an immediate American Bureau of Standards (ABS) approval letter for the TD-4100 XD deployment on an ABS classed vessel.
The USCG certification reinforces Turner Designs dramatic impact in the Marine Industry by improving the accuracy and operation of bilge water discharge monitoring from vessels. USCG certification of the TD-4100 XD makes it ideal for use by the oil and gas industry on drilling rigs and FPSO’s which must use certified discharge monitors. Unlike the traditional oil content monitors that use glass flow cell detectors, the TD-4100 detection system is non-contact and non-fouling. The TD-4100 detector utilizes a falling stream system so that the water not does come in contact with the optical windows. This means the continuous monitoring of oily water will not dirty the detector, thereby allowing long intervals between maintenance and insuring reliable monitoring of the discharge. Non-fouling detection simplifies operation of oil content monitors while minimizing maintenance.
