Voice & High-Speed Data Services

      1/24/2001

COMSAT Mobile Communications (CMC) announced that it has won a four-year contract to provide high-speed (128 kbps) data and voice satellite communications to the Seven Seas Mariner, a luxury cruise liner, which will be launched in March. With 128 kbps C-Band service, guests and crew will enjoy greater access to e-mail, fax services, and telephone service. The system being installed aboard the Seven Seas Mariner provides one of the most advanced shipboard satellite communications solutions available today with the high level of reliability.

The system will provide data ports in all of the suites as well as Internet access for the ship's Internet Café. The system permits simultaneous transmission of large amounts of data, voice calls, facsimile, and e-mail messages, provides Internet access and has the potential for videoconferencing. Kathryn Y. Holman, vice president and general manager of COMSAT Mobile Communications said "With our portfolio of global communications offerings and round-the-clock customer service and technical support, shipboard guests and crew have the ability to stay in touch with the office, clients and home from around the globe." The estimated value of the agreement is more than $1 million.
