Zanzibar Ports Corporation (ZPC, Dar-es-Salaam) expects to start manufacturing small sea-going vessels under a joint venture with a Dutch ship- building company, Damen Shipyards.
ZPC Director General Mustapha Aboud Jumbe said in an exclusive interview that under a contract signed early this month, Damen Shipyards of Holland will provide the expertise and some materials for the construction and a workshop. The venture, Mr. Jumbe said, will greatly help ZPC to acquire the technology for making small sea-born craft. The ZPC workshop will construct fishing trawlers, barges, landing craft and other small-sized vessels.
The Dutch company has another commercial arrangement with the Mwanza-based Songoro Marine Transport Limited (SMT) on Lake Victoria. The boat yard constructs fishing barges, trawlers, landing craft and are currently preparing to start constructing speed boats. The establishment of boat-building facilities in the country is expected to boost the marine sector and help alleviate water transport problems that have bedevilled southern Tanzania. The Zanzibar-Dar route has attracted more boat operators in the last five years. Whereas in the early 1990s there were only about four slow-going medium vessels, there are now over 18 boats operating on the Dar-Zanzibar stretch, most of them new.
